Garmi Ka Dost: Refreshing Jal-Jeera with a Pudina Punch!
Namaste and Sat Sri Akal, my lovely food-loving friends! Chef Curry Do’pyaza here, back in your kitchens and ready to whisk you away on another flavorful adventure. Today, we are tackling a classic Indian cooler, a drink that screams summer and sunshine: Jal-Jeera with Pudina!
This isn’t just any drink; it’s a refreshing hug on a scorching day. It’s the perfect welcome drink for guests during the sweltering months. You will find this at most North Indian weddings and festivals such as Holi, Diwali, and even just a simple family get-together. It’s a digestive powerhouse, a flavor explosion, and, let’s be honest, incredibly easy to make!
A Little Trip Down Memory Lane
Jal-Jeera, meaning “cumin water,” has been quenching thirsts in India for centuries. It’s believed to have originated in Rajasthan, where the intense heat made it essential to find cooling and hydrating drinks. Over time, different regions added their own unique twists, and my personal favorite is the addition of vibrant pudina (mint)!
Recipe Time!
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 5 minutes (for roasting spices)
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon Jeera (Cumin Seeds)
- 1 teaspoon Saunf (Fennel Seeds)
- ½ teaspoon Kali Mirch (Black Peppercorns)
- 1 inch Adrak (Ginger), roughly chopped
- 2-3 Hari Mirch (Green Chillies), adjust to your spice level!
- 1 cup Pudina (Mint Leaves), tightly packed
- ½ cup Dhaniya (Coriander Leaves), tightly packed
- 2 tablespoons Nimbu ka Ras (Lemon Juice)
- 1 teaspoon Kala Namak (Black Salt), or to taste
- ½ teaspoon Saada Namak (Regular Salt), or to taste
- 1 teaspoon Amchur (Dry Mango Powder)
- 4 cups chilled Paani (Water)
- Boondi (Small Fried Chickpea Flour Balls) for garnish (optional)
- Ice cubes
Let’s Get Cooking!
- Roast the Spices: In a small pan, gently roast the jeera, saunf, and kali mirch over low heat for about 3-4 minutes. Keep stirring so they don’t burn! You’ll know they’re ready when they release a fragrant aroma. Let them cool completely.
- Make the Paste: In a blender, combine the roasted spices, adrak, hari mirch, pudina, and dhaniya with a little bit of water. Blend until you have a smooth, emerald-green paste.
- Mix it Up: In a large pitcher, add the green paste, nimbu ka ras, kala namak, saada namak, and amchur. Pour in the chilled water and stir well until everything is nicely combined.
- Taste and Adjust: Give it a taste! Does it need more lemon juice? A pinch more kala namak? Adjust the flavors to your liking.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Serve chilled, garnished with boondi and a few mint leaves. Add ice cubes for extra coolness!
