Bread Chilli Chaat: A Chatpata Treat for Your Taste Buds, Boss!

Namaste Doston! Kem cho? Assalamualaikum! Sat Sri Akal!

Chef Curry Do’pyaza here, back in your kitchens with another dhamaakedaar recipe! Today, we are making something truly special, something that screams “India” with every bite: Bread Chilli Chaat!

This dish is a real crowd-pleaser, perfect for those unexpected guests, a quick evening snack, or even a fun addition to your Diwali, Holi, or Eid celebrations. Think of it as a desi twist on chilli paneer, but with the humble bread taking center stage. It’s spicy, tangy, sweet, and oh-so-satisfying!

A Little History, My Friend

Now, where did this chatpata creation come from? Well, the exact origin is a bit of a mystery, like finding the perfect aloo tikki vendor in Delhi. But, it is believed to have originated in the bustling street food stalls of India, where resourceful cooks found a way to use leftover bread and transform it into something magical. It’s a testament to the Indian spirit of innovation and making the most of what we have.

  • Soy Sauce: 1 tablespoon
  • Chilli Sauce: 1 tablespoon (Adjust to your liking)
  • Sirka: 1 teaspoon (Vinegar)
  • Lal Mirch Powder: 1/2 teaspoon (Red Chilli Powder)
  • Haldi Powder: 1/4 teaspoon (Turmeric Powder)
  • Dhaniya Powder: 1/2 teaspoon (Coriander Powder)
  • Amchur Powder: 1/4 teaspoon (Dry Mango Powder)
  • Namak: To taste (Salt)
  • Tel: 2 tablespoons (Cooking Oil)

Let’s Get Cooking!

  1. Cut the Bread: First, cut the bread slices into small cubes. You can also cut them into triangles if you are feeling fancy.
  2. Fry the Bread: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan. Fry the bread cubes until they are golden brown and crispy. This will give them a delightful crunch. Set aside.
  3. Make the Masala: In the same pan, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Add the chopped onions and green chillies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent and a light golden brown.
  4. Add the Aromatics: Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Spice it Up: Add the chopped capsicum and sauté for 2-3 minutes until they are slightly softened. Now, add the red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and sauté for another minute.
  6. Saucy Business: Add the tomato ketchup, soy sauce, chilli sauce, and vinegar. Mix everything together and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. The Grand Finale: Add the fried bread cubes to the pan and toss gently to coat them evenly with the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the bread is heated through and the sauce has clung to every piece.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle the amchur powder and fresh coriander leaves over the Bread Chilli Chaat. Serve immediately and watch it disappear!

Chef’s Tips for a Perfect Chaat

  • Crispy Bread is Key: Don’t skip the frying step! Crispy bread is what makes this chaat so addictive.
  • Adjust the Spice: Feel free to adjust the amount of green chillies and chilli sauce to suit your spice preference.
  • Don’t Overcook: Be careful not to overcook the bread after adding it to the sauce, or it will become soggy.
  • Fresh is Best: Always use fresh ingredients for the best flavor.

Cooking it Your Way

  • Gas Stove/Induction Stove: The recipe is perfect for both gas and induction stoves. Just adjust the heat as needed.
  • Oven: You can bake the bread cubes in the oven for a healthier option. Toss them with a little oil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Air Fryer: Air frying is another great way to get crispy bread cubes. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, shaking occasionally.
  • Microwave: While not ideal for crispy bread, you can microwave the bread cubes for a quick fix. But frying or baking is recommended.
